Make-up Story Time

Sat Sep 24, 2005, 8:00 PM
If you are not a parent, don't read this. It will bore you.
Every night then the lights are out, I lay down in the dark with my two boys, Daniel (5) and Ben (9). We make up stories in the dark. Tonights make-up story time was very short, and just me and Daniel (Ben was busy reading Tom Sawyer). The story went that there was once a mouse who wanted to fly. He found two playing cards and taped them to his arms and climbed onto a rock and jumped, flapped his arms and plummeted right to the ground. A bird flew by and said, “All you need is this feather, it’s a magic feather that will help you fly. I used it when I was a baby bird but I don’t need it any more." So the bird fastened the feather to the mouse’s tail and the mouse climbed onto the rock and jumped. As he jumped, a breeze happened to blow and the mouse flapped his arms and flew. He flew the length of two houses and landed, shouting with excitement. He said “Hey, thanks a lot bird!” The bird said “My name is Henry, what’s yours?” The mouse said “My name is Peanut, thanks again Henry!” Henry told Peanut that he would meet him here tomorrow and he flew off. Peanut smiled, then said to himself, “Well, I guess I will fly home!” So he found an old log, climbed up onto it, and jumped. As he jumped, a breeze picked up, going the opposite direction, and Peanut flew two houselengths back to his house. He went up the stairs to the room of the boy that he lived with, whose name is Daniel. He carefully stashed the two playing cards and the magic feather under Daniel’s bed. Then he climbed into his mitten-bed, on top of Daniel's bedside table, smiled happily, and went to sleep.
After telling Daniel this story I asked him if he thought the feather really was magic, or if it was just the breeze that helped Peanut fly. Daniel said, “I don’t know, what do you think?” I said that I didn’t know either, but that it can be whatever Daniel wants it to be. Daniel said, “Maybe the feather is magic, and it was the feather that caused the wind to blow for Peanut.” I said, “Daniel, you have a really smart mind.” And Daniel smiled.

hey hoosier. saw your question in the painters forum. I'm hooked on winsor and newton artist series and pre-tested series oil paints. Never heard of the alkyd types, but there are alkyd mediums you can buy to speed up the drying of oils. If I had to select between drying time and color permanence, tho, i'd go with color permanence. take care. btw, i'm in indianapolis. later.
